Contents

Part 1 Welcome

  1. 1. Welcome "Father, I have put in an offer for a new slave," I said.

Part 2 The Era and Its Powers

  1. 2. The Era In Rome the consuls give their names to the year. In 50 BC, the 704th year from the city's founding (DCCIV AUC), they are Lucius Aemilius Paullus and Gaius Claudius Marcellus.
  2. 3. Powers of the Republic In 50 BC a character with a petition needs to know which man holds the office, how he got it and who can stop him. This chapter puts names and places to the offices of the Republic.
  3. 4. Gods and Religion An election can end with a sign from the sky, and a festival closes the courts. The state asks its gods to favor Rome and in return sees that the proper men perform the rites on the proper days.

Part 3 The Places

  1. 5. Rome Begin in Rome when a campaign needs a patron, a court or a crowd. Careers begin and end in the Forum.
  2. 6. Alexandria A Roman who comes ashore in Alexandria answers to the king's officers. His citizenship has no standing here. The Ptolemies rule Egypt from a Greek-speaking capital, the Mediterranean's second city.
  3. 7. Gaul and the Provinces Beyond Italy, a Roman magistrate usually holds a province for a year or more. A governor sent out from Rome can rule as far away as Spain or Syria.

Part 4 Building a Character

  1. 8. Character Creation and Roles Use Core Rules, Character Creation, to build a human. Choose an Origin and a Role in place of a Background and Career, and record your Stake in sestertii (HS).
  2. 9. Skills and Talents Use the Core skills and talents as printed except for the changes below (Core Rules, Skills and Talents). Here you'll also find the rules for spoken tongues and literacy and 27 Era talents.
  3. 10. Gear and Prices Find the prices for arms, armor, animals, medicine, keep, services, bribes and enslaved people here. The essential gear table gives the cited books' stat lines.

Part 5 Rules

  1. 11. Era Rules Use this chapter for rank and obligation, courts, illness, travel, slavery and money in 50 BC. For arena bouts or battles between armies, see The Arena and the Games or Legion Battles.
  2. 12. The Arena and the Games Run a gladiator bout with Core combat and one extra track, Crowd Favor. It helps decide whether the loser survives.
  3. 13. Legion Battles Build the battle around the player characters' unit. Field one to six units a side, with 80 men to a century or 480 to a cohort. In each Clash, roll one Core Opposed Check per engaged pair.
  4. 14. Adversaries Use these people and beasts as opposition in 50 BC. Each uses the Core Rules, Adversaries format and one of its three tiers: Minion, Elite or Nemesis.
