Kharos Ship Catalog · Chapter 7
Salvage Ships, Tugs and Miners
Three hulls for the same frontier trade: bring the wreck home, move the ship that cannot move, and cut the rock the others will carry.
KR-51 Salvage Ship
Printed as the Heavy Salvage Tender in the Vehicles Manual. Industrial Scaffold. Scale 5. Civilian grade. 4 marks, Mk I to Mk IV.
The KR-51 is the standard heavy salvage ship of the Verge: an open scaffold hull, two claw arms, a stern winch and a bridge block at the bow. It drags a derelict home at full speed and works on it on the way. Its Common Variants include the field repair tender, which is the same hull with the workshops used for repair instead of salvage.

The KR-27 is a tug: a bundle of engine cylinders around a small crew pod. It is all engine and no hold, and it takes a disabled ship, or a barge train, where it needs to go without slowing for the weight.

At the Table: Bringing a Wreck Home
Use this when a crew recovers a derelict and tows it to a yard.
Taking the wreck. Add 1 Boon Die to the Pilot check to tow a disabled vessel; Kharos Salvage and Towing makes a salvage check that would be Severe into a Hard one (Chapter 4). A Towing Rig tows a vessel of the hull's Scale, or one Scale larger at Speed 1; the tow halves Speed and reduces Cruise by 1 (Vehicles Manual, Chapter Ten).
The long tow. The KR-51's Dead Weight Handling keeps its Speed when it tows a vessel of its own Scale or smaller, and adds 1 Boon Die to the checks that secure and steer the wreck. The KR-27's Long Tow keeps Cruise across a system and tows a vessel one Scale larger at Speed 2.
At the yard. A derelict recovered under salvage law may be filed with a prize court within 30 days (Vehicles Manual, Chapter Twelve, Prize Claims). Until it is filed the tow is a wreck, not a prize.
