Kharos Ship Catalog · Chapter 10
Ownership, Rebuilds and Refit
What a Kharos hull costs new and used, how a crew pays for it, which yard rebuilds it to the next mark and what that costs, and what the Rebuild Plate records. Rebuilding is the center of Kharos ownership.
Condition and Price
Apply the condition multiplier to the catalog price (Vehicles Manual, Chapter Twelve, Condition and the Used Market, which also gives each condition's Maintenance Clock). All marks exist at once, and the older marks are the used market.
| Condition | Multiplier | What you are buying |
|---|---|---|
| Factory new | ×1.00 | Warranty, clean registry, full service history |
| Serviceable used | ×0.55 | Ten to twenty years old, maintained, documented |
| High hours | ×0.35 | Deferred maintenance, tired systems, incomplete records |
| Salvage title, flying | ×0.25 | Recovered and returned to service; title annotated |
The Mk I of a line is the budget option. A Classic holds its used price: the used market does not discount it below its replacement (Chapter 4). A used Kharos hull is a bargain with a catch: read the Rebuild Plate. A plate with fewer chevron bars than the hull's hardware shows has been rebuilt without a certificate.
Which Mark to Buy
| If you want | Buy |
|---|---|
| The cheapest starting ship | A used KR-41 Mk I, the Classic |
| A hull you can repair in the dark | The KR-41 Mk I |
| The most Speed in a light freighter | The KR-41 Mk V, at a Forge Yard |
| A carrier that braces and stabilizes a tow | The KR-61 Mk II, the Classic |
| The thickest plate on a salvage ship | The KR-51 Mk II or later |
| The most hold for the price | The latest mark of the KR-47 or the KR-72 |
| A hull you will rebuild as you earn | The first mark of any line, with the unspent budget to cover it |
Financing
The Cooperative's canon financing is clan loans, work contracts, salvage shares and mercenary sponsorship. They map to the ownership models in the Vehicles Manual, Chapter Twelve.
| Kharos financing | Ownership model | Marks it usually covers |
|---|---|---|
| Clan loan | Mortgage, held by a clan | Mk I and Mk II, which a clan can value at a glance |
| Work contract | Work Bond | Any mark, with the contract assigned to the hull; a Mk III or later nearly always |
| Salvage share | Clan Share | A hull recovered in a crew's own tow, shared with the clan that holds the wreck's claim |
| Mercenary sponsorship | Work Bond, paid in contracts | Any hull a company wants in its fleet, usually a Scale 4 or 5 |
The marks a lender will finance are first proposals and need table testing.
Parts by Mark
Builder-matched parts install as Native (Vehicles Manual, Chapter Eleven, Part Availability). Where the builder's parts are not stocked, an established port orders them in 1d6 days.
| Where | Mk I and Mk II | Mk III | Mk IV and Mk V |
|---|---|---|---|
| Funtari space and the frontier | Stocked | Stocked | Stocked at working ports; the sealed housings and heavy plates from a Forge Yard |
| Directorate and League space | Stocked at working ports | Ordered, 1d6 days | Ordered from a Forge Yard, 1d6 days |
Rebuilding a Hull
A rebuild moves a hull from one mark to the next. It is a retrofit (Vehicles Manual, Chapter Thirteen, Upgrading After the Build): it costs double the build points of the change, drawn from the hull's unspent budget, and credits at the Scale's rate. A Kharos clan yard charges 2.0 times the credit value of those points. Any other yard charges the standard 2.5 times. Scale and operator tier never change, and a rebuild never raises a stat past its cap.
- Find the rebuild on the line's Mark Table or in Chapter 12.
- Check that the hull's unspent budget covers the build points.
- Find a yard of the right class (below).
- The yard takes the hull for a number of weeks equal to the points spent, divided by 10, rounded up.
- The yard stamps the Rebuild Plate and issues the rebuild certificate.
Yard Classes
Every clan yard of the Cooperative belongs to one of three classes. The four Forge Yards are named in Chapter 1.
| Class | Works | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Hand Yard | Marks I and II of Scale 2 to 5 hulls, and routine service for every mark | Any clan yard or licensed workshop with a gantry too small to lift a spine |
| Gantry Yard | Marks I to III of every Scale, including the Scale 6 lines | A clan yard with a crane and an open frame, found at the larger ports of Funtari space |
| Forge Yard | Every mark, and all of Mk IV and Mk V | Brandhal Yard, Tolvar Foundry, Esker Slips and Harmund Works |
What Mk IV and Mk V Cost
Mk IV and Mk V are Forge Yard work. The plates, spines and sealed housings are cast or fitted only where a gantry can lift them, and a crew cannot make them in a Workshop. The credit price is at the Kharos clan yard rate.
| Hull | New price | Rebuild from the previous mark | Yard time | Built at |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| KR-41 Mk IV | 491,000cr | 8 points, 18,000cr | 1 week | Forge Yard |
| KR-41 Mk V | 504,000cr | 6 points, 13,500cr | 1 week | Forge Yard |
| KR-51 Mk IV | 2,186,000cr | 8 points, 72,000cr | 1 week | Forge Yard |
| KR-61 Mk IV | 8,215,000cr | 12 points, 360,000cr | 2 weeks | Forge Yard |
A rebuild across several marks costs the sum of its steps. A KR-41 Mk III rebuilt to Mk V takes 14 build points and 31,500cr at a Kharos clan yard, in 2 weeks.
The Rebuild Plate
Every rebuilt hull carries a Rebuild Plate: a steel plate on the bridge block with one yellow chevron bar for each mark the hull has had (Chapter 3). A yard that rebuilds a hull adds the bar and stamps the plate. It also issues a rebuild certificate listing the mark, the date and the yard.
Certified. In Funtari space the certificate is paperwork. Elsewhere it is evidence that the hull's modification history is honest.
Uncertified. A rebuild done outside a Kharos clan yard is an undeclared modification. Outside Funtari space an inspection that finds one raises the hull's Authority Heat one step: Kharos's profile already says customs looks harder at its hulls (Vehicles Manual, Chapter Five).
Recertifying. A Hand Yard or better inspects an uncertified rebuild and certifies it for 10% of the rebuild's credit price at the Kharos yard rate, if the work meets the Frame Accord. Work that does not meet it is stripped and redone at the full price.
A Crew Rebuild
A crew can rebuild a hull to Mk II or Mk III itself: it needs a Workshop aboard, the parts, twice the yard time and a Craft check (Vehicles Manual, Chapter Ten, Installing a Module, and Chapter Eleven). Kharos Damage Control and Workshop benefits apply. The rebuild is uncertified. A crew cannot make a Mk IV or a Mk V.
Upgrading the Old Way
A crew that cannot afford a mark can buy its individual steps (a Hull block, a Speed step, a Module Slot) as retrofits at the standard rate (Vehicles Manual, Chapter Thirteen). The mark is the cheaper, certified bundle.
Example. A crew owns a KR-41 Mk I and wants a Mk II. The rebuild is 8 build points and 18,000cr at a Kharos clan yard, 22,500cr elsewhere. The Mk I spent 104 of its 190 points, so 86 are unspent; the rebuild leaves 78. A Hand Yard does the work in 1 week. The hull gains Speed 4 and Hull Points 24, loses the trait's awkward-access cover, and a second chevron bar goes on the plate.
