Crown Meridian Ship Catalog ยท Chapter 11

Compatibility

A mechanic can force almost any system into almost any hull. The difficulty depends on the relationship between the builders. This chapter gives Crown's relationships and the modifier for each. The integration table is in the Vehicles Manual, Chapter 5, Builder Integration; installation checks are in Chapter 10, Installing a Module.

Crown's Relationships

Maker Relationship Status
Crown Meridian House Native
Antaean Openframe Partner Certified
Kharos Forge Open Adapted
Viridian Lattice Open Adapted
Safa Celestial Arsenal Rival Forced
Restricted Directorate military systems Forbidden Forbidden

Installation Modifiers

Find the relationship, then apply its modifier to the base installation difficulty in the Vehicles Manual, Chapter 10. The same modifier applies to Craft checks to repair that system. Record the status on the ship sheet.

Relationship Status Modifier
House (Crown system, Crown hull) Native None; a clean module installed by a yard needs no check
Partner (Openframe) Certified Add 1 Bane Die
Open (Kharos, Viridian) Adapted Add 2 Bane Dice
Rival (Safa) Forced Upgrade 1 Trial Die to a Crisis Die and add 2 Bane Dice
Forbidden Forbidden Upgrade 1 or 2 Trial Dice to Crisis Dice (GM's choice by severity) and add 2 Bane Dice

A system installed damaged, rebuilt past its specification, or heavily modified is recorded as Forced whatever its relationship, and uses the Rival modifier. When a Crown system goes into a hull whose builder has a Weak drawback that adds Bane Dice to installation (Viridian, Kharos for AI systems, Safa), those dice add on top.

An imperfect installation can leave a lasting defect, a failure mode. When one applies, use the Mixed-Builder Failure Modes table for Partner, Open and Rival installations and the Military Failure Modes table for Military components: Vehicles Manual, Chapter 10, Mixed-Builder and Military Failure Modes.

Mixed Ships

Crown systems in other hulls. A Crown system keeps its Signature benefit in an Openframe hull, because Openframe is Crown's Partner. In a Kharos, Viridian or Safa hull it works as a Standard system, with no benefit and no penalty. A Crown ship that takes in enough foreign systems to lose Integrated Architecture loses Crown's once-per-encounter cascade protection with it (Chapter 4).

Other systems in Crown hulls. A Kharos engine in a Crown hull works as a Standard system: Kharos and Crown are Open, not Partners, so it does not bring Kharos's Signature benefit. An Openframe system in a Crown hull keeps its Openframe benefit. The Crown benefits of the systems still native stay, and Crown's Weak drawbacks stay with the hull.

Safa. Crown and Safa are rivals. A Safa reactor or fire control suite in a Crown hull is a Forced integration and works as a Standard system. Persistent Bane, Collateral Downgrade and Firmware Conflict are the likely failure modes.

Directorate military systems. Restricted Directorate hardware is Forbidden aboard a civilian Crown hull. A Crown ship carrying it without certification loses its low authority heat at once.

A ship that thinks and reads its own damage Viridian
A hull that is easy to patch in the field Kharos
A hull that outruns and outshoots Safa, at a price in integration
