Openframe Ship Catalog · Chapter 6

Light and Heavy Freighters

The Model 20 is the ship most crews start with. The Model 40 is the one they grow into, if the paperwork allows.

Model 20 Light Modular Freighter

A Modular Spineframe freighter in three versions: v1.0 (Classic), v1.1 and v1.2.

The Model 20 is Openframe's light modular freighter and the most commonly recommended starting ship. A narrow spine carries an offset cockpit and detachable cargo sections. No two Model 20s look the same after a year in service.

Trait Openframe Interfaces: When installing or removing a legal commercial module at a proper yard, reduce the work time by half. When installing a salvaged or incompatible module, remove 1 Bane Die caused by awkward physical access or mounting geometry. Open Interfaces: All eight Module Slots are Open: no license, no annual fee, and installing a salvaged or incompatible module in one needs no Craft check.

Version notes. Model 20 v1.0 (Classic). The hull the Vehicles Manual prints as the Model 20. Every slot is Open and nothing is owed. The crews who kept their v1.0s did the arithmetic on the fees. v1.1. Two more Module Slots and 20 more Cargo, with two more pods on the spine. The new slots are Licensed. v1.2. A Hull block and one more Module Slot, a thicker truss behind the cockpit and one more equipment housing. Three Licensed slots now.

Common Variants. Tramp freighter, Smuggling ship, Passenger hauler, Courier, Salvage vessel, Mobile workshop, Colony supply ship.

Model 40 Heavy Modular Transport

A Modular Spineframe heavy freighter in three versions: v1.0, v1.1 (Classic) and v1.2.

The Model 40 is the largest ship one person can realistically own outright. Above it, the paperwork stops being about you and starts being about your creditors. Families, cooperatives and owner-operators buy it to reconfigure over a working lifetime.

Trait Licensed Automation: While the hull's Openframe license is current, checks to operate the Model 40 with fewer than its standard crew of 20 remove 1 Bane Die. While the license is lapsed, those checks add 1 Bane Die.

Captains who run shorthanded keep the v1.1.

Common Variants. Bulk hauler, Mobile workshop, Colony supply transport, Mobile trade post, Family-operated freight line, Salvage mother ship.

At the Table: Loading and Stowing

Cargo handling is what an Openframe hull is for. Use this when a crew loads, unloads or hides freight.

Loading. A check to load, unload, secure, hide or organize cargo aboard an Openframe hull adds 1 Boon Die , and for creative stowage the hold counts as 10 Cargo Units larger than listed (the Builder row prints the figure). At a port with loaders, pods on clamps load and unload in half the normal time.

No loader. Without a pod loader, pods must be hand-clamped: the check is Hard and the work takes twice as long. A Model 80 without port handling equipment cannot unload at all.

Stowing. A pod clamped on a spine is cargo and a mission section is not: a crew may hide freight in a pod's void or behind a panel, but a license audit reads every pod's panel (Chapter 10).

Pressure. A job that must load fast, in a port with one working loader and a competing crew, is a check against the clock. Give the crew a Boon Die for a good plan and a Bane Die for a crowded pad.
