Security Frigates and Carriers

The Cathedral Axis at Scale 6. The frigate guards and hauls; the carrier launches. Both are space-only hulls built around an upright reactor spine.

S6 Security Frigate

A Cathedral Axis security frigate in 3 versions: S6, S6.1, S6.2.

The S6 is a security frigate, Safa's armed corporate transport and convoy escort, and the first of its Cathedral Axis hulls. An upright reactor spine rises between ribbed towers and protected docking courts. It is the one Axis hull with a hold, and the commercial ceiling of Safa's military assumptions before the S7.

Builder Benefit (Safa). Full Signature benefits apply to a Safa system in a Safa hull: guided attacks add a Boon Die, point defense reads one higher, the reactor counts one higher for overload, and the security, electronic warfare and cyberdefense systems take their Bane Dice. Chapter 4 has the rules.

Model Trait: High-Output Spine (S6, S6.1). Once per encounter, the engineer may reduce the Heat or System Damage cost of pushing one Reactor, Fire Control, Defensive Control, Electronic Warfare, or Sublight Engine action by 1.

Model Trait: Ordered Batteries (S6.2). A battery of identical weapons draws 1 less Power Load than the battery rules give, never less than one weapon's Power Load.

Factory Packages. S6, S6.1 and S6.2: Reinforced Command Core, Internal Security Suite, Counterboarding Suite, Barracks Module, Armory, Electronic-Warfare Suite, Shuttle Bay (2 slots). Empty slots: 2.

Version notes. S6 (Classic). The Vehicles Manual's frigate, unchanged, with an 80-Unit hold: a convoy master can load it. S6.1. Stepped armor plates on the lateral shoulders: one point of Armor, the Professional cap. It keeps the hold. S6.2. Two more covered turrets on the shoulders and the flank cargo hatches blanked over: two more hardpoint points and a System Point block, bought with the hold. A shipping house keeps the S6 or the S6.1.

Common Variants. Security frigate, Armed corporate transport, Command transport, Restricted research vessel, Defense platform.

S19 Strike Carrier

A Cathedral Axis strike carrier in 2 versions: S19, S19.1.

The S19 is a strike carrier, a Cathedral Axis hull whose docking courts are a hangar. It carries eight craft of Scale 3 or smaller, a flight deck's worth of crew and guns enough to bring them home. It has no hold and no passengers worth the name. It is where the Talon lives.

Craft. An Expanded Hangar carries eight craft of Scale 3 or smaller and launches one a round (Vehicles Manual, Chapter Fifteen, Carried Craft). A typical air group is six Talons and two S17s.

Model Trait: Launch Cycle (S19, S19.1). Once per encounter, the hangar launches or recovers up to four craft in one round instead of one.

Factory Packages. S19 and S19.1: Expanded Hangar (3 slots), Reinforced Command Core, Internal Security Suite, Electronic-Warfare Suite, Repair Drone Bay, Barracks Module, Armory, Damage Control Station. Empty slots: 1.

Version notes. S19. The first version, with one slot open. The Launch Cycle opens the hangar courts wide for one round. S19.1. One more closed Standard-mount cover on each shoulder and the lit flight-crew windows blanked over: two more hardpoint points, a third Laser Battery. Passengers fall from 40 to 28, since the space is a magazine now.

Common Variants. Strike group carrier, Escort carrier, Patrol carrier, Training carrier.

At the Table: Launching a Strike Group

Use this when a carrier puts craft into a fight (Vehicles Manual, Chapter Fifteen, Carried Craft).

Rate. Each bay or cradle launches or recovers one craft a round. The S6's Shuttle Bay launches two Talons in two rounds; the S19's Expanded Hangar launches eight in eight. The Launch Cycle lets the hangar launch or recover up to four in one round, once per encounter.

Recovery. An Average Pilot check, Hard while either ship is under fire or maneuvering. A Talon that has not acted this round and is Engaged with its carrier can dock.

Left behind. A carrier that leaves the system while its craft are out has left them behind. A Talon has 12 hours of Endurance. Tell the crew before the carrier commits.

Losing the bay. A craft in an internal bay cannot be attacked while the parent's hull holds. When the parent is destroyed, everything in its bays is lost.
